We are Fundación Comunitaria Oaxaca (Oaxacan Community Foundation), an organization with more than 20 years of experience. The essence of our work is to add to the dreams and against the challenges of organizations and communities who work hard to improve their well-being and quality of life. Our contribution to community development is through initiatives that generate fundamental and enduring changes, based on community vision and on the strengthening of the local agents of change.
Our feeling after the earthquakes is similar to the context—full of contrasts:
The great cultural wealth differs from the conditions of economic inequality; the earthquakes of September considerably affected Chiapas and Oaxaca, two of the States with the greatest extreme poverty in the country.
The solidarity of citizens of the country, and of different parts of the world, contrasts with the absence and lack of government responsiveness to the magnitude of the impact on thousands of Oaxacan families.
Although as a foundation it had responded to other kinds of emergencies in the past (floods, landslides, and disasters caused by torrential rains or hurricanes), the reality facing us last September 2017 marked a turning point in the operation of the Foundation. On the one hand, we have the extent of the immediate and subsequent damage; and on the other, the reaffirmation that our work is to promote grassroots development, by strengthening groups and organizations. They have been the actors who responded by organizing themselves, acting and proposing, with the valuable support of the private sector, the civil society and the public sector.
It’s just that effort reflected in proposals and actions what motivates us as a Community Foundation to continue with what we do best: accompany, strengthen and link this with new actors, not only in the immediate effect, but in a long-term vision to generate a true community resilience.
