San Gregorio Atlapulco, Comunidad Organizada

Proyecto: Reconstruyendo en San Gregorio Atlapulco, manantial de esperanza

Xochimilco, CDMX

Marisol González César

In the wake of the September 19, 2017 earthquake, the inhabitants of the town of San Gregorio Atlapulco, Xochimilco, in Mexico City, radically changed our way of life.

In the absence of relevant and timely actions by the federal, state, and delegation authority, a group of residents from the town’s central area, with the support of the civil society, began a collaboration process for the comprehensive restructuring of our people, having as main objectives:

  • Starting an integral organizing process to strengthen and confirm the participation of villagers, in order to promote actions that impact on the damage caused by the earthquake;
  • Helping in the reconstruction of the town with the support of technical professionals in construction, engineering and architecture;
  • Promoting with neighbors the recovery of the social fabric and the defense of our rights; and
  • Promoting the leadership of women from the community, who have traditionally been the mainstay of families and the society of Atlapulco, taking advantage of the natural resources of the place.

We have decided to undertake other activities seeking the common good and community heritage, which have characterized us as native people since pre-Hispanic times, and which make our dreams of San Gregorio becoming a true “spring of hope” come true.

Chicuarote, wise, superb and piquant apantle of ancient culture,
From its waters divine chinampas spring,
And so too flowers, and exquisite fruits, vegetables and greens,
Feeding and cheering our souls.

Atlapulco, your temperate people will not succumb,
Rooted in their fertile history,
Nahuatlaca, revolutionary,
Critical and propositive
Zelous of their existence
No more, no less
Chicuarote, forever strong before adversity,
Will not succumb
